326

On Sunday, August 2, 2026, the Parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Oberá, Argentina, solemnly celebrated the 60th anniversary of its canonical establishment. The jubilee offered a special opportunity to thank God for the many graces received, for the generations of faithful who built and strengthened the parish community, and for the many decades of missionary service carried out by the Basilian Fathers in Argentina.

The celebration brought together clergy, representatives of local government, parishioners, and guests who gathered in thanksgiving for this important milestone in the life of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community.

The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was presided over by Bishop Daniel Kozelinski, Bishop of the Eparchy of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, based in Buenos Aires. Concelebrating with him were Fr. Antonio Zubyk, OSBM, Provincial Superior of the Province of St. Joseph in Brazil, under whose jurisdiction is the Province of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Argentina; Fr. Dominic Starepravo, OSBM, spiritual director at the Faculty of St. Basil the Great (FASBAM) in Curitiba; Fr. Jaime Valus, OSBM, assistant pastor at St. Josaphat Parish in Prudentópolis, Brazil; Fr. Federico Ostrowski, pastor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in San Vicente; and Fr. Pedro Rinczeski, OSBM, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Oberá.

Among those joining the celebration were Br. Irineu Letensky, OSBM, Rector of FASBAM (Basilian University), and the Mayor of Oberá, Pablo Hassan. During the celebration, Mayor Hassan presented a commemorative recognition honoring the tireless pastoral ministry of the Basilian Fathers, who have served the local community for more than six decades. Also present were Aide Cavana, head of the municipal Department of Religious Affairs, and Norberto Korner, coordinator for Catholic Church affairs.

Following the Divine Liturgy, clergy, faithful, and guests gathered for a festive luncheon in a warm atmosphere of fraternity, joy, and fellowship.

The celebration continued with a performance by the Ukrainian Kalena Dance Ensemble (Ballet Ucraniano Kalena), which operates through the Immaculate Conception Parish in Oberá. The ensemble presented a vibrant program of traditional Ukrainian dances, adding a joyful cultural dimension to the anniversary and offering a living witness to the Ukrainian community’s commitment to preserving its heritage.

The Basilian Fathers in Oberá: A Historical Overview

The history of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Oberá dates back to 1938, when Basilian hieromonks of the Order of Saint Basil the Great of Saint Josaphat, then residing in Apóstoles, began providing pastoral care to Ukrainian Catholics in Oberá. In those early years, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the homes of the faithful.

In 1943, Fr. Orest Dub, OSBM, purchased a parcel of land from Carlos Emilio Kindigren at 752 Gobernador Barreyro Street in central Oberá, intending to establish a permanent place of worship for the community. Four years later, in 1947, he moved permanently to Oberá and built the first chapel there, dedicating it to the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In 1948, pastoral care of the chapel was provided from Posadas by Fr. Joseph Galabarda, OSBM. Two years later, Fr. Matei Sianchuk, OSBM, arrived in Oberá and served there for approximately six months. From 1951 to 1962, Basilian priests residing in Apóstoles once again provided pastoral care, travelling weekly to the central region of Misiones Province. Among those who served during this period were Fr. Basil Zinko, OSBM (1951–1958), and Fr. Mykola Gembarowski, OSBM (1959–1961).

In 1957, Fr. Joseph Galabarda, OSBM, purchased a parcel of land from Basil Lutz. This property would eventually become the site of the Basilian monastery and the present parish church.

In 1962, Fr. Chrystofor Myskiv, OSBM, arrived in Oberá from Prudentópolis in the Brazilian state of Paraná. He began construction of the facilities for the St. Olga Educational Association, today known as St. Olga College. The following year, Fr. Mykola Gembarowski, OSBM, settled permanently in Oberá and from there also provided pastoral care to the community in Leandro Alem.

Following a reorganization of the parish in Apóstoles, four new ecclesiastical jurisdictions were created. The Parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was subsequently canonically established, with Fr. Orest Karpliuk, OSBM, appointed as its first pastor and superior of the Basilian community in Oberá. Divine Liturgies continued to be celebrated in the original chapel on Gobernador Barreyro Street, near the property where the diocesan curia of Oberá is located today.

Beginning in 1966, the Basilian Fathers established their permanent residence at the site of the present parish complex. This made it possible to provide continuous pastoral ministry throughout the surrounding region. Fr. Orest Karpliuk, OSBM, became the principal driving force behind the construction of the present church, monastery, parish hall, and numerous other parish initiatives.

At the same time, Fr. Mykola Gembarowski, OSBM, carried out extensive missionary work throughout central Misiones. Travelling along rural roads and often making his way through difficult terrain, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy in private homes, schools, and farm buildings, bringing the Gospel and the sacramental life of the Church to Ukrainian families scattered throughout the region. Through his tireless ministry, numerous communities were organized and several churches were established that later became part of, or were pastorally served by, the parish in Oberá.

Through the missionary work of the Basilian Fathers, a network of Ukrainian Greek Catholic communities developed throughout central Misiones, including:

  • St. Joseph Church — Aristóbulo del Valle
  • Sacred Heart of Jesus Church — Campo Viera
  • Christ the King Church — Cerro Moreno
  • Holy Family Church — Dos de Mayo
  • Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God Church — Los Helechos
  • Saints Peter and Paul Church — Panambí
  • St. Nicholas Church — Picada Internacional
  • St. Michael Church — Pindaití
  • Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church — Indumar
  • St. John the Baptist Church — Guiray

Fr. Mykola Gembarowski also extended his missionary activity to San Vicente and surrounding settlements, helping organize new communities and construct chapels to provide spiritual care for the growing Ukrainian Catholic population.

Building the Present Church

On September 19, 1976, the land and cornerstone for the present parish church were solemnly blessed by Bishop Andriy Sapeliak, Eparch for Ukrainian Catholics in Argentina.

Among those present were Fr. Isydor Patrylo, OSBM, Superior General of the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat, who travelled from Rome; Fr. Dorotheus Shymchiy, OSBM, Provincial Superior of the Vice-Province in Argentina; Fr. Orest Karpliuk, OSBM, pastor of Oberá and a principal initiator of the monastery, church, and parish hall projects; and Fr. Mykola Gembarowski, OSBM, who also played an important role in bringing the project to completion.

After more than two decades of dedicated work and the united efforts of the community, the newly completed church was solemnly consecrated on November 5, 2000, by His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar, Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The consecration marked the completion of one of the most significant church-building projects undertaken by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community in Oberá and central Misiones.

Architecture and Sacred Art

The church was designed in a distinctive Byzantine style. Its architectural plan is centered on a circular rotunda, while its impressive hemispherical dome symbolizes the flame of a candle—an image of the light of faith and prayer rising toward God.

The church was designed by architect and engineer Bohdan Kyshakevych, who skillfully adapted traditional Ukrainian sacred architecture to the tropical climate of Misiones by incorporating an open arcade surrounding the building.

The interior harmoniously brings together two artistic approaches. During the 1980s, renowned Ukrainian artist Volodymyr Kaplun painted the lower portion of the church, creating an impressive iconographic ensemble rooted in the Byzantine artistic tradition that flourished for centuries in Ukraine. Among his works is an icon of the Mother of God of Hoshiv, one of the most beloved Marian images of the Ukrainian people.

The upper portion of the central nave features an image of Christ the Lover of Mankind surrounded by angels. It was painted by Brazilian Basilian hieromonk Fr. José Ratusznei, OSBM. His work complements the church’s broader artistic program and contributes to its distinctive spiritual character, deeply rooted in the heritage of Eastern Christianity.

Since 2016, the church has also served as the site of the annual national pilgrimage of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Argentina, gathering faithful from communities throughout the country for prayer, celebration, and fellowship.

Its pastoral territory includes churches and chapels in the departments of Oberá and Cainguás, where the Basilian Fathers continue to serve communities in Aristóbulo del Valle, Campo Viera, Cerro Moreno, Los Helechos, Panambí, Dos de Mayo, and other communities throughout the region.

With its distinctive dome, unique within the province, and its valuable sacred artwork by Volodymyr Kaplun and other artists, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of the Immaculate Conception in Oberá stands today as an important monument to the religious, artistic, and cultural heritage of the Ukrainian Byzantine tradition in Argentina.

Above all, it is an expression of gratitude to God for the enduring witness of the faithful and for the Basilian Fathers who, for more than six decades, have proclaimed the Gospel and served the Ukrainian Catholic people of Oberá and the surrounding region.
