The Basilian presence in Poland dates back to the early 17th century. Over the centuries, monasteries in Zamość, Lublin, Chełm, Kraków, Warsaw, Przemyśl, Biała Podlaska, and other places belonged to various Basilian jurisdictions: the Suprasl Archimandry, the Lithuanian Congregation, the Province of the Most Holy Trinity, the ancient Ruthenian Province of the Protection of the Mother of God, the Chełm Province, and the Galician Province of the Most Holy Savior.
The last Basilian monastery in Warsaw was closed by Russian authorities in 1872. After World War I, the monasteries in Przemyśl (re-established in 1913) and in Warsaw (restored in 1930) were attached to the Galician Province. Following World War II, these houses became the center of a new Basilian Delegature in Poland, officially established on January 3, 1946. The first delegate was Fr. Pavlo Pushkarsky, OSBM.
In 1959, permission was granted by Primate Stefan Wyszyński to open a novitiate. Over the decades, the Fathers focused on parish ministry, retreats, chaplaincy, and serving as confessors to both Ukrainian and Polish women’s religious communities.
On December 12, 1983, the Delegature was raised to the status of Vice-Province under the title of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God, and in 2005 it was elevated to full Province status. Since the 1990s, its monasteries have also served as study houses for Basilian students from Ukraine, Romania, and Slovakia.
Today, in 2025, the Province has monasteries in Warsaw, Przemyśl, and Węgorzewo, and a residence in Kętrzyn. The Fathers serve seven parishes: Warsaw, Węgorzewo, Kętrzyn, Kruklanki, Giżycko, Asuny, and Banie Mazurskie. The Protohegumen’s residence is at the Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Warsaw.
