Monastic life in Transcarpathia has ancient roots, following the Rule of St. Basil the Great. In 1733, monasteries in Mukachevo, Berezne, Imstychiv, Krasnobrod, and Zarichiv were united into the Province of Saint Nicholas.

A reform in 1920, guided by Galician Basilians, renewed the Province. On April 2, 1932, the Congregation for the Eastern Churches canonically recognized the Province of Saint Nicholas.

During Soviet times, the Province was suppressed, but in 2008 it was restored. Today, it includes five monasteries in the Zakarpattia region, under the Mukachevo Greek-Catholic Eparchy sui iuris.

It also oversees the Province of Saint Stephen in Hungary. A novitiate is active, and the Province’s main mission is parish ministry and missionary work.
