The Basilian Fathers began permanent ministry in Portugal in 2001. Fr. Josaphat Andriy Koval, OSBM, was the first to arrive in Lisbon on February 22 of that year, at the request of his superiors and with the blessing of the Patriarch of Lisbon. Later in 2001, he was joined by Fr. Nathanael Harasym and Fr. Vitaliy Klymchuk, and in 2002 by Fr. Boniface Zalutskyi. Over the years, more Basilian priests were sent, and today there are eight Basilian Fathers serving in Portugal, representing three different provinces of the Order.
On May 27, 2021, the Protoarchimandrite, Fr. Genesius Viomar, OSBM, officially created the Delegature of Saint Josaphat in Portugal. This new structure includes two houses: the Monastery of Saint Joseph within the Patriarchate of Lisbon and the Residence of Saint Archangel Gabriel in the Diocese of Leiria-Fátima.

The establishment of these communities is the natural outcome of more than 20 years of dedicated Basilian ministry in Portugal. It strengthens community life, provides better coordination for pastoral service, and supports the spiritual growth of the faithful, especially Ukrainian Greek-Catholics living in Portugal.
