Hieromonk Terentiy Tsapchuk, OSBM, Elected Auxiliary Bishop of the Buchach Eparchy

On Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV had given his assent to the decision of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to elect Father Terentiy Vasyl Tsapchuk, OSBM, a hieromonk of the Order of Saint Basil the Great of Saint Josaphat, as Auxiliary Bishop of the Buchach Eparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. He has been assigned the titular see of Orea.

Bishop-elect Terentiy Tsapchuk was born on July 21, 1980, in the village of Chortovets, Ivano-Frankivsk region.

After graduating from the local school in 1997, he entered the Ivano-Frankivsk Theological Seminary. In 1998, he entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Basil the Great at the Krekhiv Monastery, where he made his first monastic vows in 2000.

From 2000 to 2001, he studied at the Josyf Veliamyn Rutskyy Basilian Institute of Philosophical and Theological Studies in Zolochiv. From 2001 to 2003, he continued his formation at the St. John the Baptist Metropolitan Major Seminary in Warsaw. From 2003 to 2006, he studied at the Major Seminary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lviv in Briukhovychi.

He earned a master’s degree in theology from the Pontifical Academy in Kraków. In 2016, he completed further studies at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Lublin, receiving a licentiate in Church history.

Father Terentiy made his perpetual monastic vows on August 19, 2006, in Hoshiv. He was ordained a deacon on August 20, 2006, in Krekhiv by Bishop Hlib Lonchyna. On July 26, 2007, he was ordained to the priesthood in Buchach by Bishop Irynej Bilyk.

Following his priestly ordination, he was assigned to serve at St. Basil the Great Monastery in Lutsk. There he served first as superior and later as hegumen of the monastery. He was also pastor of St. Basil the Great Parish in Lutsk, Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos Parish in Kivertsi, and Descent of the Holy Spirit Parish in the village of Kryzhivka.

During his ministry in the Lutsk Exarchate, he served as chairman of the Youth Commission. From 2010 to 2018, he was protopresbyter of the Lutsk Deanery; from 2011 to 2020, chairman of the Catechetical Commission; and from 2019 to 2020, syncellus for monastic and religious life.

From 2020 to 2024, Father Terentiy served as assistant pastor at Christ the King Parish in Ivano-Frankivsk. Since May 2024, he has served as hegumen of the monastery and pastor of the Dormition of the Mother of God Parish at the Marian Pilgrimage Centre in the village of Pohonia, Ivano-Frankivsk region.
